High School Subjects Self Taught,
Published in Hardcover by Delacorte Press (June, 1967)
Average review score:

Excellent book for reviewing a wide range of subjectsThis is a excellent and concise summary of a wide spectrum of subjects that probably goes far beyond what is taught in many high school classrooms today. In all probability, after reading this book one would have a far better understanding of the areas presented than what most students obtain from a "liberal arts" education at a junior college. It is well structured with a logical format to both the information presented and how best to attack each area. Although ambitious in the spectrum of areas covered, especially considering the book's moderate size, I felt it gave a very good, reasonably detailed review of each one. I used it as the springboard for a more in-depth study of those areas I found particularly interesting. As an example, the section on ancient, medieval and modern history was quite good as an overview but, being a history buff, I used "History of the World" by J.M. Roberts for a more detailed reading of some of these areas. My only critisism, if it could be called that, is with the name. This could easily have been named "An overview of basic and essential knowledge" (or "what should be taught in high school and post graduate school but many times isn't").
One of the best reference books any college student can buy.A must if you are going back to school ( college, or high school)

Hitler's Spanish Legion: The Blue Division in Russia
Published in Hardcover by Southern Illinois Univ Pr (Trd) (June, 1979)
Average review score:

Thorough research on a seldom-mentioned topic in historyA great book for everyone. It is one of the few books that would satisfy both the serious historians with the detailed accounts and the casual readers with the plethora of human drama. It describes the journey and battles of the Spanish Blue Division, made of volunteers from Spain to fight Soviet Russia. By recounting the events in one sector on the Leningrad front, the book gives the readers a feeling of the enormity of the Eastern Front. A must-read for anyone interested in World War II history.

The Hoodoodad
Published in Paperback by Fantagraphics Books (January, 1999)
Average review score:

What a findAlthough I didn't like this one as much as Harum Scarum, it was still pretty fabulous. I found these books in a comic store and bought them on a whim (I go into comic stores about once every five years, and usually don't buy anything). They were every bit as satisfying as Tintin or Asterix were when I was twelve! Only better. These books are silly, funny, raunchy, and impossible to describe. The characters are wonderfully fallible, and the plots are totally off-the-wall, without being impossibly surreal.
In the Hoodoodad, you're never sure if there really IS a curse on the cool rock that they find. The guy who finds it is convinced, but it's not until the story takes a few twists that you really believe him. And of course his friends are no help; they're too busy being rude to each other in that laddish, fin de siecle slacker sort of way. It's hilarious.
The best of European comixLewis Trondheim renews European comic book tradition, mixing animal-like characters such as Walt Disney's, English humor and French-Belgian style. In this album, the famous rabbit McConey faces a strange spelled rock. He and his friends run from one problem to another, but never lose their sense of humor. They'll meet amazing people such as Wilfried, the painter who don't want his pictures to be seen (he wouldn't be reincarnated as long as someone remembers him), the crazy director of the Museum and an all-around magician (voodoo, African wizard, Shaman, astrologist - you name it !) Most funny and witty indeed ! - No sex, no violence, no explicit text, but I wouldn't call it a book for children anyway : their parents may like it more than they would. And what's exciting is that Lewis Trondheim has got many other comic books waiting for a translation !

How High She Flies
Published in Hardcover by Aviatrix Publishing (15 May, 1999)
Average review score:

Amazing book about an amazing woman!I always enjoy Ms. Cooper's books about female aviators and this is no exception. Dot Swain Lewis was a Woman Airforce Service Pilot in WWII and also a very talented artist. This is a great book that captures the WASP spirit and is filled with great images and stories.
How High She Flies; A Winner! How High She Flies is a beautiful book about an extraordinary woman! Dorothy Swain Lewis is an artist and sculptor, a teacher and mother, a bright and humorous lady whose story is an inspiration. A World War II WASP, Dot has created the bronze statues to her fellow fliers at the Air Force Academy and the Air Force Museum, among other sites. Her statues, paintings and cartoons are included in this well-written and beautifully illustated coffee table book that truly celebrates a lady who has flown mighty high!

The Hurting Parent
Published in Paperback by Zondervan (April, 1980)
Average review score:

The Hurting ParentThis book was an answer to prayer. I actually found it at a garage sale. After reading it, I realized the many things that I had been doing incorrectly to resolve an on-going problem in my relationship with my adult son. I have started to put some of the principles outlined in this book into practice. I have not seen progress from my son, however, my mental state is much better and positive. I still have a long way to go but will continue to reread this book to reinforce the principles found there.
The Hurting PartentThis book helped me to retain (or regain!) a level of rational thinking at a time when there was nothing rational in my personal life. All three of my beloved children were out of control and our family life was in chaos. One child was into drugs, one was into alcohol, and one was trying to cope with severe trauma. I was on a guilt trip that threatened to engulph me, and it seemed like I had slipped into a deep black pit with slippery walls. The entire world seemed black to me. One of the strongest helps I received was The Hurting Parent. The various topics seemed to address my pain - - even the topics that did not apply to my situation. Since then I have bought several copies of this book, and then loaned them out. They don't seem to come back, so the people I have given them to must consider them helpful in their lives, too. Thank you Margie Lewis & son!

I Haven't Understood Anything Since 1962
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (Trd Pap) (August, 1997)
Average review score:

I haven't understood anything since 1962The first book I have ever read in my 55 years that actually made me laugh out loud while reading. This is the funniest book since the Clinton administration or the Gore/Bush election. Truely hilarious!
Grizzard points out where society went wrong.Grizzard points out what is wrong with American culture today, and where it started. A good book for anyone with a sense of humor, and a must read for any Good Ol' Southern Boy. Being one myself, I agreed with almost everything he had to say, and found myself rolling with laughter at most of it.

Ice Cream and Iced Desserts: Over 150 Irresistible Ice Cream Treats-From Classic Vanilla to Elegant Bombes and Terrines
Published in Hardcover by Lorenz Books (June, 2000)
Average review score:

Awesome Ice Cream BookWow, this book is totally beautiful. There is a wide range of recipes from simple and basic to complex and decandent. There's basic ice creams, such as coffee and choclate ripple; sorbets and granitas; and various other cold desserts such as strawberry semi-freddo (partially frozen dessert). There is also a good section on garnishing and in one recipe you make a frozen ice bowl with roses in it (look at the cover). All of the instructions are very simple, they include pictures and they are done step-by-step. You can get this book just for the scrumptious looking pictures or if you are looking for a book that will help you impress guests on a warm day, this is it!
Lots of wonderful things to do with your ice cream machineI found this book while browsing the ice cream cookbooks looking for a coconut ice cream recipe and was really impressed with their recipe (nice and tangy with lime juice). This book has lots of interesting recipes for ice creams and iced desserts which go beyond the average ice cream you find in the dairy section such as sorbets, pies, parfaits, tortes, brulees. I like the fact that they have instructions for making Kulfee (Indian Ice Cream) in an ice cream machine (the recipes are geared for the average ice cream machine). The instructions are accompanied with pictures of how to do it for those of us who are cooking "impaired." There are lots of other bits of ice cream history and other facts which will help you make some very wonderful ice desserts. This book is defintely worth the money!
